Freedom in the Water: Oscar’s Journey

Oscar under the water during his swimming lesson

Oscar has always loved moving, but not every activity comes easily. Group sports and lessons are noisy, crowded, and full of rules that feel confusing. For Oscar, a child with autism, sensory sensitivities, and coordination challenges, these settings often leave him frustrated and anxious.

But Oscar is also a lot like any other child. He loves the thrill of JiuJitsu, where he can throw big hits and feel strong. He enjoys cycling with his dad, navigating trails and the Olympic Park, even if it takes practice to stay steady. He’s playful, curious, and full of energy. Just like kids everywhere who want to explore, move, and have fun.

Swimming was different. From the moment he started with Level Water, Oscar discovered a place where he could move his body the way he wanted, feel confident, and enjoy true freedom. “In the water, he feels happiest and most confident,” says his mum, Charlie. “Group sports are tricky for him, but swimming is where he shines.”

Oscar’s lessons are tailored to his needs. With 1-to-1 attention and clear, concise instructions, he learns at his own pace. The calm, supportive environment allows him to focus, build coordination, and improve spatial awareness. Every week, he gains more stamina, pushes himself a little further, and develops the safety skills that give him independence in the water.

Charlie explains, “Finding an activity that brings a neurodiverse child confidence, self-esteem, fun, and enjoyment is a wonderful thing. Swimming is something he wants to do. It is a place where barriers come down, and he can really flourish.”

Before Level Water, 1-to-1 lessons were expensive, difficult to schedule, and often disrupted by other swimmers or crowded pools. Here, Oscar thrives in a structured, welcoming space, guided by teachers who understand his needs and celebrate his progress.

For Oscar, swimming is more than learning to stay safe. It is freedom, independence, and joy. Every lesson is a step toward confidence that will extend beyond the pool, into other parts of his life.

Charlie adds, “Thank you to everyone at Level Water and the pool for helping children like Oscar fulfil their potential in something they love."
