Below is all the information to help you plan for this year’s swim. Make sure you’re at the right place at the right time, you know where to drive and park; and you know what you need for the swim. Take the time to read it through. If your question is not answered below, please contact swim@levelwater.org

Registration will be open in Totnes from 5:00pm - 7:00pm on Friday. You can pick up your race pack for the Saturday or Sunday swim.
Totnes Event village (registration) opens @ 7:15am on Saturday and 7:45am on Sunday.

Blue - Sat 10:35 / Sun 11:05Your swim briefing will be 15 minutes before your wave time above. Please be ready to swim for your briefing as you’ll go straight from this, into the river.
You need to collect your race pack before the swim, so please arrive at least 2 hours before the event start time.
If you are parking at Greenway please make sure you allow plenty of time to do so and make it onto the shuttle bus to the start (coaches leave at 7:15am on Saturday and 7:45am on Sunday)
Traffic in the area will be heavier than normal so please factor in additional travel time.
Post Swim Coaches
The coaches from the swim finish (Greenway) back to Totnes will be done in three waves from 13:15 Saturday and 13:45 Sunday. The coaches depart on a first come first served basis, and it is a fairly long round trip for them to get to Totnes, drop off swimmers and get back to Greenway for the next run. We appreciate your patience.

It's possible to have a car-free weekend, as Totnes is well served by public transport and a coach transfer is included in the price of your entry.
We strongly encourage all swimmers to car share to keep the small, winding Devon roads clear of traffic.
Parking at the start:
There are paid council car parks in Totnes. Please make sure you arrive in time to find a space and put sufficient time on your vehicle. You will be unable to park in Longmarsh Car Park (the one right next to the swim start) as this is closed for the event. There will be coaches to take you back to your car after the swim.Parking at the finish:
The National Trust have kindly allowed us to use their field at Greenway, Galmpton, for parking. There is a limited amount of space and you must pre-book this parking field. Parking will be released to you via email and on your swimmer dashboard in the spring.To help us spread out the traffic arriving in the area, we have split car parking into swimmer and spectator parking. Please note the difference in timings:
Swimmer parking – arrive before 7:00 on Saturday and 7:30 on Sunday to take a coach to Totnes for the start.
Spectator parking – arrive after dropping your swimmer in Totnes: after 8:15 on Saturday and 8:45 on Sunday. There is only room on the pre-swim Greenway to Totnes coaches for swimmers, so spectators will not be allowed on these.
If you've booked parking your name will be on a list (this will be the swimmers name) at the gate when you arrive.
Your Greenway car parking passes cover you for the whole day. The parking field will close in the evening, there is no overnight parking.
Please work with us on this. If you haven’t booked Greenway parking field you will need to drive to Totnes, as there are no other options available at the finish.

The Swim Start (Totnes)
Longmarsh Carpark, Totnes, TQ9 5EW
There will be no parking available in Longmarsh Carpark as it is closed for the event, but Totnes is a small town with many other parking places available within walking distance from the start.
The Swim Finish (Greenway)
Greenway, Galmpton TQ5 0ES
Parking at Greenway is restricted, please see parking section above for details.
Traffic Management & Road Closures
Be aware that many of the roads around the event will have traffic management running on them. Take a look at the map provided so you know how to navigate the area.
Swimmers Parking at Greenway
The roads around the event are very narrow, to help reduce the impact on the event and the environment, please do car-share where possible. The roads are winding Devon lanes with passing and single track sections so please:
● drive slowly
● pull in early
● err on the side of backing up rather than squeezing forwards
● leave plenty of space to the car in front
With these measures gridlock can be avoided. Please follow all travelling instructions, which are designed to keep traffic flowing. Just one car travelling in the wrong direction causes delays.

All you really need to swim is:
A full-length wetsuit (“wrist-to-ankle neoprene”)
See the skins swimmer section below for information on swimming the Dart10k without a wetsuit, or anything less than a full-length wetsuit.
Goggles
A small bag of things to change into after the swim (max 4kg if you are using our baggage transport)
You may wish to bring things like, ear plugs, vaseline, neoprene gloves/socks/hoods etc. but these are optional.
What is NOT allowed
Tow floats
Having these as part of our swim makes it harder for our safety cover to identify you, as it doubles the the number of brightly coloured things in the water. If you have a medical reason for requiring a tow float, please email swim@levelwater.org

GoPros
In fact any “extra” kit is not allowed at this event (watches are OK).

Registration
Once you’ve arrived in Totnes, head to the registration tent. Our amazing volunteers will check you in, give you your race pack and write your swimmer number on your hand.You can also arrive on Friday and register for either day (See timings section above) If registering on Friday please write your number on your hand using the pens provided before the swim.
You will not be able to register for Sunday on Saturday.
Your Race Pack
You’ll collect your race pack at registration (See timings above). They will NOT be posted out to you.
The pack contains:
Your swim hat, which must be worn during the swim and is coloured to match you wave.
Numbered wristband (must be worn on your wrist)
Numbered baggage tag (if you wish to drop a bag)
Skins swimmer wristband (If accepted through the skins swimmer process)
Timing chip to be worn around the ankle, ideally underneath your wetsuit to keep it safe.
YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ENTER THE WATER UNLESS YOU HAVE YOUR HAND NUMBERED, YOUR WRISTBAND, TIMING CHIP AND YOUR SWIMMING HAT.
Baggage
You can either leave bags with your supporters (if they are meeting you at the finish) or give them to us to look after. Please label with tags provided in your race pack. We will look after all small (4kg max) bags.
Morning Refreshments
We will have a coffee and breakfast stand at Totnes. VG and GF options available.
Water Bottles
Please bring your own bottle for water refilling so we use fewer cups.
Toilets
We will have toilets to use before and after the swim, please do not get changed in them as this can create queues.

You can check/ change the wave you’ve entered by logging in to your SWIMMER DASHBOARD.
To help you decide your wave please consider your 1 mile swim speed in a pool:
Leisurely (Orange) = 36 mins +
Medium (Red) = 31 - 35 mins
Faster (White) = 26 - 30 mins
Racing (Blue) = under 25 mins
If you are wanting to change your wave after the final deadline, please come and see us at the info desk on the day. If space in the wave allows, we will swap you but this cannot be guaranteed.

Once you’re in the water, it’s up to you. Enjoy the atmosphere and don’t forget to look up every now and then and enjoy the scenery around you.
Swim Safety
There will be a full water safety crew on the water at all times. If you need support or you notice another swimmer needs help, please alert one of the lifeguards. If a swimmer is to be extracted from the water, a full medical team is standing by on-land to provide immediate care. A full safety briefing will be provided before the swim in Totnes.
Tow floats, fins, music, GoPros, in fact any “extra” kit are not allowed at this event (watches are OK).
How fast do I need to swim?
The 10k swim is for swimmers who can do a mile in under 40 minutes. If you become separated from the main pack, then the safety crew may pick you up and leapfrog you further down river. This swim is not suitable for plus-40-minute milers. Experience of open water / outdoor swimming is required.
Feed Stations
There will be two ‘feed stations’ along the route. One at 4km and one at 7km. There will be flapjacks (VE) , bananas (VE/ GF) and vegan sweets available.
We will not be able to accommodate individual or personal snacks for swimmers.

You will exit the water at the finish via a small ramp onto an Aquadock pontoon which is about 200m long, then across a pebble beach (which will be carpeted). You will then enter into a field through the finish funnels where we will remove your timing chip & wristband. There will be a warming tent and medical support based here. The walk back to the event village and car park from there is up a fairly long and steep hill (you will get your finishers mug and hot chocolate half way up!).
Greenway Event Village
The event village will be in an amazing courtyard at the top of a glorious field over looking the River Dart. We’ll have food stalls, refreshments, music, warming and changing tents, toilets and our amazing brand partners.
Returning to Totnes
Following the swim, coaches will transport swimmers back to Longmarsh carpark in Totnes. See Parking, Transport & Coaches section above for further information.

The Dart10k take places place on the river Dart, between Totnes and Greenway. The Greenway site has an event village and a large field with a lovely view over the river.
Totnes
Supporters are more than welcome to see the swimmers off at the start. There will be refreshments and entertainment and a really great atmosphere.
You will not be able to drive into Longmarsh carpark on the day of the swim unless you are a blue badge holder. If you are dropping off a swimmer, please drop them off elsewhere in Totnes and walk to the start of the swim.
Greenway
There is an amazing courtyard event village at the finish with food, drink and entertainment.
Spectators can only drive and park in Greenway if you have a parking pass. All other spectators must get on the spectator coaches from Totnes (see Parking, Transport & Coaches section above).
The walk down to the river is steep in places so please be careful when walking down the hill.
Spectators will not be allowed onto the beach at the finish of the swim. It is private land and only swimmers, event staff and volunteers can access it. Spectators will be allowed to the bottom of the hill to see swimmers come through the finish which is an amazing atmosphere.

We will do everything we can to support swimmers with additional needs.
Access to and from the water’s edge is difficult. The closest a vehicle can reach the start line is around 5m, so a method of crossing this distance of tarmac and gravel is required.
The finish is on a pebble beach and there is a long/ steep hill climb from the finish line back to the event village.
If you require adjustments (e.g. access for vehicle pick-up/drop-off at start and finish villages, or putting a wheelchair into the baggage van for you) then please ensure you record this in the “medical” box of your registration form. If you could email swim@levelwater.org highlighting this, to ensure your specific needs are met, that would be helpful.
If you need more complex adjustments (eg assistance from a helper whilst you're in the water, exiting at the alternative exit point or any kind of mechanised / wheelchair access to and from the water), please email swim@levelwater.org and we will contact you to figure it out.
If you have any concerns whatsoever about your medical fitness to participate, please consult with your GP before taking part in the swim.

If you or any of your spectators have had diarrhoea/vomiting within 48 hours before the event, please do not attend. If you become unwell during the event, please let one of the team on site know and kindly head home from the event. (As long as it is safe to do so).
Please bring personal medication if required (eg inhalers, epipens etc).
It is important that you are aware of the symptoms of water-borne illnesses and do your best to look after yourself and reduce your risk of getting ill. Here’s an interesting article on the topic.
If you’ve been diagnosed with a heart condition since buying your ticket, we kindly ask you to please not swim - this is for your own safety.

If you would like to swim in less than wrist-to-ankle neoprene, then you must fill out the skin swimmer form by clicking HERE. The deadline for submitting this form is the 30th April.
The returned skins swimmer application will be considered, and you will then be informed of our decision within a month. The team will be looking at 3 things:
Previous documented experience of long-distance swimming without a wetsuit in similar temperatures, e.g., the Channel, Windermere one-way, BLDSA events, Swimtrek.
Current training at similar temperatures (anticipated 14-17 degrees)
Willingness to undertake a long-distance practice swim prior to the event of a similar distance and a similar temperature prior to the event, to ensure you do not become hypothermic.
You do not need to provide notarised evidence, logbooks of your experience or certificates of completion to evidence your experience. We will assess your experience based on your skin-swimming application form, completed by you. We work on the basis that your application is truthful. Where appropriate we verify this by looking at events’ official published results.
The decision of the water safety manager is final on wetsuits and no discussion can be entered into. We advise swimmers to be prepared to wear a wetsuit if asked. All swimmers agree to abide by the event rules.
The bottom line on skins swimmers is that we welcome experienced skins swimmers, who show (on their application form) recent experience and acclimatisation to these distances at this temperature, but we are not the place to do your first long skins swim (or your first long skins swim in a while) as you will not have individual safety support. This rule is for everyone's safety - safety cover is shared. Groups such as the BLDSA offer swims where you provide your own safety cover and are more appropriate for anyone trying a long-distance swim without a wetsuit for the first time.
Please note, your ticket is sold on a “wetsuit compulsory” basis, and if we are unable to grant you skins swimmer permission your ticket is not refundable.

The water quality in Totnes (the swim start) is consistently rated "Poor: advice against bathing" by the Environment Agency. Median readings for Enterococci and E.Coli are 2-4x the "Sufficient" standard, and this may result in an elevated risk of illness. Thousands of committed outdoor swimmers still wish to take on this classic route, and we run the swim on the basis of personal responsibility. We intend to run the swim if water quality in Totnes is in the expected range, but may cancel if there are strong indications that it is unusually poor. Entry types
Charity Place
A charity place comes at a reduced fee (£70 instead of £120) and with a fundraising target of £250. All the money you raise goes towards 1-1 swimming lessons for children with disabilities across the UK.
General Entry
General Entry is £120 and gets you access into the Dart10k on your chosen day.
Volunteer & Swim
These tickets are very limited and give you reduced entry into the swim (£70 instead of £120) and you agree to volunteer the day you are not swimming. You’ll also receive priority entry for the 2027 Dart10k.
If you do not volunteer, the charity will ask you to pay the additional amount of £50.
What’s included with your ticket?
The swim! Your entrance fee covers the costs of putting on a complex event like this, including swim safety cover, medical cover, timing/safety chips, baggage transfer, coach transfers and an event swim hat and gift.
Can I get a refund?
After the initial 14 day cooling off period we don’t offer refunds on tickets. If you cannot swim then you can transfer your ticket to someone else.
We have an adverse weather cancellation insurance policy. If this is triggered and pays out to us, we will be able to refund an equivalent proportion of your ticket price. The details of this policy are below.
Cancellation by us
Level Water works hard to deliver events that are as safe as possible. The safety of our participants and staff is always our priority. There are inherent risks and challenges of swimming in the sea, river or lakes, which can lead to situations where event cancellation, rescheduling or reformatting is required.
We may have to cancel an event if circumstances beyond our reasonable control arise, including, without limitation, war, civil or political unrest, terrorism, adverse weather or poor water quality.
We are not insured for all event cancellation eventualities.
If circumstances beyond our control require us to cancel the event, then Level Water has no responsibility for any costs you have incurred and unfortunately won’t be able to issue a refund on your ticket purchase unless it is weather related.
Cancellation insurance for adverse weather.
Level Water holds adverse weather event cancellation insurance for our 2026 events.
If we cancel the event due to adverse weather, we will file an insurance claim. If this is successful, the insurance payment will be used to issue refunds or partial refunds.
Whilst we’ve taken care to ensure that the policy includes relevant details, as with all insurance policies, the final discretion is with the insurer and therefore cannot be guaranteed.
The details of our insurance policy state that;
The event can proceed in continuous moderate rainfall
The event can proceed in wind speeds up to 20mph
The event cannot go ahead in continuous heavy rainfall
The event cannot go ahead in wind speeds over 20mph.
The policy excludes cover for cancellation, abandonment, disruption or rescheduling of the event directly or indirectly resulting out of, contributed to by, or in connection with fog, mist, low cloud or restricted visibility.
The policy covers extreme weather conditions which:
a) occur on the day(s) of the event and which are deemed by you or the event organiser on the day of the event to pose a serious threat to the safety of those attending the event;
and/or b) occur during the policy period and which result in conditions which the local authority consider to pose a serious threat to the safety of those attending the event;
and/or c) occur during the policy period and which prevent You or the event organiser from undertaking the necessary set up to enable the event to proceed due to: (i) concern for the safety of those responsible for the necessary set up, or (ii) reasons of physical impossibility
We have a process in place with Event Water Safety Limited and the Dart Harbourmaster to ensure that we monitor the weather meticulously in the run up to the event. Level Water will take the decision, based on advice from Event Water Safety Limited and the Dart Harbourmaster as to whether or not the swim is safe to go ahead.
We will communicate with you at the earliest possible opportunity if there is a risk of cancellation.

You will exit the water via a small ramp onto an Aqua dock (a floating jetty) and walk about 200m to the beach.
Once on the beach, there will a carpet leading you to the entrance to the event village field. About a 10m walk.
There is then a walk up a short hill, 250m, up towards the event village. At the bottom of the slope we will have refreshments, a warming tent and medical support.
We have an alternative accessible exit which involves a short boat ride and a short car ride to the event village.

In our opinion, the most amazing way to experience the Dart10k is by getting a train down to Totnes and staying in the town. Having a car free weekend takes all the pressure off you and we can easily ship you around on the many shuttle buses available.
The roads are small and tight and traffic can easily build up. By getting the train and shuttles you are taking away all the stress and are able to simply enjoy the magic of the river and the beauty of Devon.

When you register you’ll receive an email confirming your registration (check your spam/junk email folders just in case). If you definitely haven’t received a confirmation email by 48 hours after the money was taken from your card, then please email swim@levelwater.org and we will look into it for you.

No, you can only buy a place for yourself, as each swimmer is required to sign the waiver. Tickets can only be purchased through our website’s ticketing platform Njuko - any tickets bought through any other source will be void and will be cancelled without refund or compensation.

When buying a fundraising ticket at a significantly reduced price you will have a fundraising target of £250 for Level Water. We will support you along the way. On average people raise £400!
Please set up your JustGiving page straight away, or give us a good reason for not setting up a page (using another platform, offline fundraising, joint page).
If you do not fundraise then you will be required to pay the difference in your tickets price (£50) before you are allowed to swim.
All money raised goes to Level Water to teach children with disabilities to swim. We work at 200 pools around the country and deliver 60,000 bespoke swimming lessons each year.

There will be priority parking at the finish at Greenway.
There are disabled parking bays at Longmarsh car park. They will be first-come, first-served.
If you need accessible parking please email us at swim@levelwater.org before purchasing tickets to discuss your needs.

You can be dropped off at the start in Totnes.
If you supporter is then driving to meet you at the finish, please make sure you have booked them a parking ticket for the parking field.
There is a limited amount of space and you must pre-book this parking field at a cost of £10. There is no alternative parking near the finish and anyone who hasn’t pre-booked (swimmer or spectator) will be turned away.
Please work with us on this, pre-book the parking and use the provided car park. The car park will be open all day but is not available overnight.

The Dart10k is a bucket-list challenge and a "marathon" distance swim. Many swimmers target this event for a number of years, and build up their distance before taking on the swim. If you are unsure then you may wish to get another year of training and a shorter outdoor swim under your belt before taking on the Dart10k. Of course, we will make sure all participants finish safely and successfully.
If you can already swim continuously for at least 3km, can swim a mile in under 40 minutes in the pool, and are committed to training through the summer, then this is probably within your reach.

Yes. First, cold acclimatise – this means swimming outdoors regularly before the event, in a lido, sea, river or lake. You may be amazed how fast your body gets used to lower temperatures. Second, consider investing in a rash vest, booties or gloves if you are particularly prone to cold. Remember, you will be generating heat as you swim.

Most swimmers will do front crawl, as it is an efficient stroke that allows you to see where you are going. The main issue with breaststroke will be your comfort: it is hard to do breaststroke for sustained periods in wetsuits as they put extra pressure on the knees. Backstroke is not allowed, as you cannot navigate the course or other swimmers.

Swimmers are asked to time themselves in the pool when they register and give us their time for swimming a mile at a relaxed and sustained pace. The 10k swim is for swimmers who can do a mile in under 40 minutes. Once in the water, do not worry about anyone else, relax and swim at your own pace. If you become separated from the main pack, then the safety crew may pick you up and leapfrog you further down river.
This swim is not suitable for plus-40-minute milers. Experience of open water / outdoor swimming is required. Swimmers who aren't able to maintain the 40-minute pace risk running out of water depth at the finish line due to the tide.
Training is required and a good level of swimming is necessary to complete the swim.

Our water safety team will be on hand during the event to offer their support, and very tired, cold or struggling swimmers will be evacuated from the water/leap-frogged down river.

Yes, full-length (“wrist-to-ankle neoprene”) triathlon/ swimming wetsuits are compulsory. We do allow a limited number of experienced ‘skins’ swimmers to take part. This is because it is a long swim and the water is cold: with a shortie or no wetsuit you will get too cold. Surf wetsuits are not typically comfortable or flexible enough to swim 10k: they are restrictive around the shoulders, which makes front crawl harder, and very buoyant around the feet which makes breaststroke difficult.
The non-wetsuit category is for pre-authorised experienced swimmers who have recent experience of swims of similar and greater length without wetsuits in the previous 12 months.

Unfortunately not. One of the things that makes this swim so special is that the River Dart can only be experienced in all its glory from the water. There is very little footpath or road access to the water.
Shuttle buses are available to transport supporters to the start and finish.
We ask that spectators and supporters do not attempt to kayak or boat alongside the swimmers, in order to minimise the amount of boat traffic on the river around them. Ample professional safety cover is provided for the swimmers; there's no need for additional boats around the swim.
