Bantham Swims
The Bantham Swoosh and Boomerang are world class swims in the Avon (Aune) estuary in Devon. The estuary is both shallow and sandy bottomed so you might spot the local crabs cruising around the river bed beneath you.
The river narrows in a “swoosh” as the ebbing tide is funnelled through a narrow section of river, speeding you along over the riverbed at up to four times your usual swimming speed. It’s exciting, invigorating, beautiful and fun.
Here’s what swimmers have to say:
“Genuinely an excellent experience all round.”
“Been thinking about Level water everyday since the swim, thinking about how to raise money and what a lasting feeling that swim left with me”
“Some of us did the Swoosh and some the Boomerang. We loved the food and drink stalls after the Boomerang and sat in the village for a while. There was a lovely atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back!”
Taking place on Saturday 18 July 2026, the Bantham Swoosh is a stunning 6km downstream swim through the River Avon estuary in South Devon. Unlike the Boomerang, which sends swimmers out-and-back, the Swoosh is a one-way tidal ride, finishing with a thrilling, fast-flowing “swoosh” as the tide accelerates you towards the iconic Bantham Beach.
This is the original and best-known of our estuary swims – ideal for those wanting to experience the magic of the current, soak up beautiful scenery, and enjoy a world-class point-to-point swim.
Join us on Sunday 19 July 2026 for the Bantham Boomerang – a unique estuary swim where you head upstream with the tide… and then ride it back to Bantham Beach with the “swoosh.” Depending on when you enter the water, you can swim anywhere from 5km to 10km – it’s your call.
Unlike the Bantham Swoosh, which is a straight one-way swim, the Boomerang challenges you to test your timing and strength on the way out, before enjoying the fast-flowing return. It’s a perfect choice if you want more control over your distance and love to tune-in to the power of the river as you swim.
Your swim ticket includes:
A registration pack with a timing chip, numbered wristband and swim hat
A Bantham Swoosh or Boomerang towel
A free coach ride to or from your car
A delicious selection of snacks and food at the start and finish area
Full safety crew on the river throughout the swim, including boats, jetskis and paddleboarders
Volunteer support at the start and finish of the swim
Hot chocolate or other hot drink when you arrive in the finish village
Swimming with an amazing community
Personalised support if you have accessibility needs
Knowing that your swim is helping to provide swimming lessons for children with disabilities, and that’s pretty wonderful
